My recommendation for a DIY website in a nutshell
For the most solid, robust and yet simple and cheap individual portfolio site, I recommend that you sign up for an account at WordPress.com and simply work with their most basic template option. You can set up your site and poke around a bit without paying (though they make that really unclear). Your first year with WP with a domain will run you under $50, that is the best deal around and will give you excellent, professional-looking results.
The basic default template is a great starting place for a portfolio site. Here are some options for making it “your own”:
- Use a new background image (your own or a free stock image from Unsplash.com)
- Change the fonts
- Change the colors
- Change the section called “From the blog” to “My Porfolio”
- Include featured images on your posts (the items in your portfolio)
- Choose a new “theme” from the WordPress directory
